dc.descriptionInternet exists since the late 60s and became a global network in the early 80s. By that time the general design and most of the basic protocols have been laid down. Since then its scale and complexity have become orders of magnitudes larger concerning both the number of nodes and the amount of traffic flowing through. Although smaller modifications have been done and the hardware behind the Internet has changed significantly, the basic structure has remained the same. Recently, several international efforts try to re-design the Internet from clean slate. It is expected that a more optimal design will solve the most pressing problems we currently face. To enable the design of a better system it is essential to understand the details of network and traffic dynamics. For this purpose we need large-scale network measurement and analysis methods. This course focuses on the state-of-the-art network measurement techniques enabling to measure and analyze different aspects of the Internet form topology measurements to IP geolocation of network devices. Besides the necessary theoretical backgrounds and classical results, the most recent papers from top conferences are also shown and discussed, while in practical lessons, students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with existing large-scale Future Internet experimental facilities like PlanetLab, ETOMIC, GEANT, etc. during student projects.en_EN
